Aimee Gibson, GB women’s no.1, lifted her first title of the new year as she and partner Alba Perez Momha won the FIP Bronze event in Doha at the weekend.

Aimee and Alba claimed sensational back-to-back FIP titles at the end of a stunning 2025 for the Essex left-hander. After last weekend’s victory in Qatar, she confirmed that she intends to play with world no.70 Perez Momha for “the rest of the season.”

In January, Aimee reached the semi-finals of the FIP Silver event in Melbourne with GB no.2 Catherine Rose, where they were defending champions.

In Doha, Aimee and Alba’s progress was serene all the way to the final as they didn’t drop a set.

They won 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16 against Spanish pair Lucia Dionisio Laureano and Daniela Portilla Gomez, and 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters against Kotomi Ozawa and Anastasiia Ryzhova, before breezing past third-seeded Italian pair Giorgia Rosi and Matilde Minelli in the semis – 6-0, 6-1.

That set up a final clash between the top two seeds, as Gibson and Perez Momha faced Mexican Camila Ramme Coellar and American Brittany Dubins for the title, who were also yet to drop a set to that point.

That changed in the final, as the Brit and her partner won the first set 6-2, before losing the second 6-1. The contest was finely poised at 3-2 in the final set when world no.86 Ramme Coellar injured her ankle, forcing her and her partner to retire, thus handing Gibson her first title of the season.

The British no.1 has risen one place in the world rankings, to no.89, as a result of the victory in Qatar.

Gibson described her triumph to the LTA after the tournament, telling them she was “super happy” with her performance and her fourth title in a row while playing with Perez Momha.

She said: “It’s great to win my first title of the season, Alba is super happy too. Coming back from six weeks of pre-season to win the title together is a very nice feeling.

“Overall, we are very happy with our performance in the three matches beforehand, especially in the semi-final where we won 6-0, 6-1, and played a really good, high level together.”

On Ramme Coellar’s injury, after which the Mexican was in tears when the pairs shook hands, Gibson said: “My regards go to Camila in the final, we were one set all, 3-2 and then she had pain in her ankle, so she had to retire in the last set.”
