Championship Sunday at Ultra Padel Club by Miami’s famous South Beach saw Miami Padel Club beat defending champions Las Vegas Smash 2-0, with New York Atlantics also winning 2-0 against Toronto Polar Bears in the third-place play-off.

As you’d expect, Argentine’s golden boy, former world No.1 Agustin Tapia, was instrumental in Miami’s victory, teaming up with John Sanz to cap victory in the final in the men’s doubles. Women’s doubles duo Marta Talavan Ruiz and world No.1 Ariana Sanchez had set up the win a little earlier.

That win gives Miami an early advantage in the standings as the players take a well-earned one-day break before Event 2 begins on Tuesday. After that, the PPL resumes in August with another double-header in Los Angeles (12-17 and 19-24 August), then the top eight teams in the standings will contest the PPL Cup Final in New York from 18-23 November.

GB No.3 Louie Harris made one appearance in the group stage for San Diego Stingrays, winning a consolation point in a mixed doubles victory alongside Marta Morga in a 2-1 defeat to Toronto Polar Bears. The Stingrays finished fourth out of five in the White Group and missed out on qualification for the semi-finals.

While Miami may have claimed the glory in the franchise’s home city, it was also a ‘home’ event for San Diego Stingrays’ very own Floridian Brittany Dubins. She represented USA at the World Championships in Dubai in 2022 and is currently 144 on the FIP rankings.

Brittany is one of only a handful of US players on the pro tour but revelled in the chance to play in front of family and friends at the Ultra Padel Club. She told CBS: “I love being at home and having my friends and parents come to my matches. It feels amazing. I love the people, the weather, so I’m just so happy to be here.”

Her San Diego Stringrays team-mate, Lucia Sainz from Spain, added: “Playing with Brittany is great. It is important to have an American player play in this tournament because we need Americans to play this sport.”
